Why Engagement Photos are Necessary- And What to do with Them

Engagement photos are the first opportunity that I have to actually work with my couples after you book your wedding with me. And, this occasion is the first chance I get to begin learning about both of you as new friends. For these two reasons alone, I highly encourage all of my couples to do engagement photos, but there are also a few other reasons.

During your wedding we will have time after the ceremony and all of the family formal portraits, we will have the time to take portraits of just the two of you. When working with couples who’ve not had engagement photos, time is taken up in quickly teaching you how to pose before the golden hour of light disappears. During an engagement session, we have the time to work on learning posing and all of the tips and tricks, so that the special time we have together after your ceremony can be just that: special, quiet, and intimate, rather than awkward and uncomfortable.

On the day of your wedding, I will probably show up right about the time you’re ready to get into your wedding clothes, and it can be rather awkward to have someone you don’t really know taking photos of you zipping up your dress or buttoning up your shirt. An engagement session gives us the time to become more familiar with one another- to hopefully become friends. That way, when I do walk in to capture your getting ready photos, you’re welcoming a friend.

As to what to do with them, there are many options: you can use them as part of custom engagement announcements, you can post them on your wedding website, you can use them to decorate your home by printing them and framing them, you can use them as part of a display at your wedding, even. There are so many options as to what you can create with your photos these days.

An engagement session may seem like it is a trivial matter, or even something else on what feels like a never-ending to-do list, but it can be a fun-filled, relaxed time. I urge you to consider having one done.
